This is a class for
those who have never learned to draw and are scared to try, or for those
who are stuck or discouraged. Through a series of exercises, learn to
see as an artist sees and draw simple pencil drawings of common objects.
Drawing is a learned skill, not an innate talent. This means you can learn
to draw. Lots of individual attention - class size limited to 10.

Students explore color, texture, and other aspects of painting in creative,
expressive abstract art. With gentle, non-judgmental instruction they
are encouraged to dismiss the "inner-critic" and do anything
and everything they think is not allowed, breaking all the rules. There
are no failures only unfinished paintings. Knife painting is encouraged
(but not required). Paint your heart out!!

In his Treatise on
Painting, Leonardo da Vinci wrote: "Sight training is the main factor
in drawing and painting." Henri Cartier-Bresson wrote: "In whatever
one does, there must be a relationship between the eye and the heart."
In this class students with some basic drawing or painting experience
work from still life and nature at your own level and speed, using the
materials of your choice. More experienced students may select their own
subjects. Individual attention focuses on improving technical skills,
color, composition, drawing and developing a truthful personal style.
Rusty artists are always welcome!

Georges Bracque wrote, "There are certain mysteries in my own work
which even I don't understand, nor do I try to do so." In this class
we honor the mysteries and surprises of creativity and try to nourish
and stimulate the imagination that helps the creative juices flow. A hands-on
course with guided projects for those with or without art experience using
any art materials you wish including collage and found (or long-kept!)
objects. Explore new ideas and find your creative voice!

A class for complete beginners or painters with some experience who want
to strengthen basic skills. No drawing experience is necessary. An introduction
to all the fundamentals, working from still life and natural objects.
Materials for the first class are supplied by the instructor. Intermediate
level students focus on individual improvement.

Come and learn how to copy a famous portrait in acrylic on canvas. Students
will learn to use a grid system to copy/enlarge the portrait, about proportion
and facial features, to do an under painting and mix skin tone colors.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Many
of the classes will be held in Studio 17, the spacious Ora Lee Starnes
classroom with wonderful natural light. Some classes meet in locations
as determined by the instructor.
The
Starnes classroom, was named in honor of the beloved teacher and principal
who taught at the McGuffey School as well
as at other area public schools. Her legacy of learning continues
as a part of the McGuffey Art Center.
*Many
classes will be continuing and accepting new students for our 8 week
Spring Session beginning April 3.
