The McGuffey Artist Residency Program is a rotating residency program where up to two working artists or a collaborative art group from the Central Virginia community can share an available studio space for *free* at McGuffey Art Center (located in downtown Charlottesville, VA) for 1 month or 2 months on a project basis.

The application cycle is currently closed and will re-open in early Fall for residency slots in January - June 2022. Application submissions for this program will be accepted on a rolling basis to fill available residency months. Selected artists will be notified within 3-4 weeks of their application submission about their acceptance to the program.

Artists will be given up to two months notice of their starting residency month, in order to provide the artist with enough time to collect their project materials. Selected artists will be able to move in at the start of their residency month and bring any/all necessary supplies for their work (acknowledging the limited duration of the program).

As a resident artist, you’ll have access to:

  • Using your residency studio space as a working environment and to showcase your work for studio visits, events, or tours during your residency month(s).

  • Join the McGuffey artist community through engaging in committee work and participating in events.

  • Participate and talk about your work and artistic process at any First Friday events, during group tours of the building, or through a virtual artist talk event.

  • Being featured on McGuffey Art Center's website, Instagram, and Facebook during your stay in the program. The alumni who pass through the program will be added to an ongoing list on our website (under “Residency Artists") with links to their artist websites and relevant social media, for their future portfolios.

  • Participate through showcasing work in a yearly alumni artist exhibition at McGuffey Art Center, featuring past Residents. Our next residency exhibition will be in June 2022.

To apply, fill out your application HERE. Within the application, artists are required to submit:

  1. Contact information

  2. Specifics of the program you'd like to apply for -- Please indicate the duration of residency (1 or 2 months), what months you'd be interested in or available for, and whether you would be comfortable sharing your space with another artist.

  3. Artist CV / Resume (s) -- This can be a simple document which includes an artist bio or statement, your relevant art experiences (previous exhibitions, residencies, etc.), and any artistic achievements. This document should be no more than 1 page. If submitting this application for a collaborative group of artists, you may attach multiple files.

  4. Project statement -- This can be a simple document which indicates what you will work on during your time in the residency program. This document should be no more than 1 page.

You can take into consideration using this space to answer some additional questions: What medium will you work in or materials will you use for this project? How is this project representative of you as an artist or your process? What inspired you to do this project, or what inspires you as an artist? What do you hope to gain from this experience in the residency program? What are ways that you envision McGuffey Art Center aiding you in this process?

  5. Samples of your work -- Please submit 3-5 samples of your work, which you feel are representative of your body of work as an artist or your focused artistic medium. Please label each of your files accordingly, with the title of the work and dimensions of the work (if relevant). If submitting this application for a collaborative group of artists, you may attach multiple files.

After submission of your application, you can expect to hear back from McGuffey Art Center within 3-4 weeks following.

We invite established or working artists, or collaborative groups of all mediums (including but not limited to visual and performance art) in the City of Charlottesville or neighboring counties in the Central Virginia area. We encourage and welcome Black, Indigenous, and Artists of Color in the community to apply.

If you are an emerging artist and interested in a longer-term residency stay, please consider applying to our Incubator Studio Program instead. Our next application cycle for that program will begin in early March 2022 for the residency year of 2022-2023.
