Lua Project, in collaboration with McGuffey Art Center would like to invite you to our 13th annual Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, which will kick off on November 1st at 5:30pm at the McGuffey Art Center with music, dancing, delicious Mexican food. There will be beautiful memorial altars both to see and a community altar to contribute to. The exhibition will be open to the public until November 17th. But don't miss coming to our kick off celebration on November 1st so that we can celebrate our loved ones in community together!
This yearly celebration is hosted by Lua Project, a local music group that performs, teaches and organizes cultural events in the Charlottesville community and beyond. Over the past 12 years, thousands of community members have come out to celebrate their loved ones during this beautifully colorful and magical celebration of remembrance.

"McGuffey Art Center has been a perfect place over the years for this celebration" says Estela Diaz Knott, organizer of the event and member of the center. "McGuffey is much like a Casa de cultura, which are houses of culture found in almost every city and town in Latin America. I was so excited when I became a member of this very rare artist-run cooperative and am so grateful for the city of Charlottesvilles support in making this place available to working artists who need the space to share their art and projects with the larger community.”
Would you like to reserve space to create an altar for your loved ones who have passed away? Complete this short form. Altar setup will begin on Sunday afternoon, October 27 (between 4 and 5pm-we will contact everyone if we can start earlier). The assembly will continue all day Monday, October 28. Each person/group will be assigned a 3 foot by 2.5 foot space for their altar. Space is limited, so please respond by October 11 to reserve a spot. Bring everything you need to set up your altar. What is Day of the Dead?
From October 31st through November 2nd, Día de los Muertos/ Day of the Dead, is one of the most colorful and artistic celebrations of Mexican tradition. Communities across Mexico (and other parts of Latin America) build and decorate memorial altars in their homes, graveyards and community gathering places, using colorful flowers, banners, candles and photos of loved ones to honor and celebrate their lives. Families share stories, songs and food. Many other cultures across the globe hold similar celebrations often around harvest time as we move into Winter. The Irish and Scottish, for example, celebrate Samhain.
Whatever your tradition, as we move from the climax of Fall into the slumber of Winter, many people over the years have found this yearly celebration a soul soothing, heartwarming way to remember loved ones who have passed on.
Del 31 de octubre al 2 de noviembre, Día de los Muertos, es una de las celebraciones más coloridas y artísticas de la tradición mexicana. Comunidades de todo México (y otras partes de América Latina) construyen y decoran altares conmemorativos en sus hogares, cementerios y lugares de reunión comunitaria, utilizando flores coloridas, pancartas, velas y fotografías de sus seres queridos para honrar y celebrar sus vidas.
